Abstract

922,905. Magnetic coatings on paper. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 29096/59. Class 96. [Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVIII] A magnetic record comprises paper coated with an aqueous synthetic latex dispersion containing iron oxide, e.g. Fe 3 O 4 or Fe 2 SO 3 , particles and a thickening agent. The latex dispersion may be polystyrene-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, or an acrylic resin. The thickening agent may be an algin (e.g. sodium alginate), polyvinyl alcohol, or hydroxyethyl cellulose. Dispersing agents such as condensed napthalene sulphonate and sodium polyphosphate, and a preservative such as sodium benzoate may be included; casein, as a protective colloid may be included, as may pine oil, octyl alcohol and a silicone complex as anti-foaming agents. The dispersion is applied to the paper in stripes by means of an applicator roller 17 rotating oppositely to the direction of movement of the paper, dried in an oven 22, squeezed between rollers 32, 33 to reduce thickness trimmed and cut into sheets. The paper may be printed with conventional printing ink on both sides, perforated, corner-notched and cut to provide ledger sheets. Specification 922,906 is referred to.
