Abstract

922,849. Pneumatic suspension control valves. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41481/60. Class 108(2) A control unit for an air suspension levelling valve comprises a body 10 containing a valve 21 carried by a diaphragm 20 and a spring loaded disc valve 16 which permits pressurized fluid to flow to the diaphragm 20 during rapid vertical movement of the vehicle whereupon the valve 21 prevents air flow between an air reservoir (not shown) and the air springs (not shown) of the vehicle. As shown, a control unit is screwed into each end of the cylinder 12 of a doubleacting hydraulic shock absorber 13. One control unit has a connection 25 from the air reservoir and a connection 26 leading to a levelling valve (not shown) and the other control unit has a connection 27 from the levelling valve and a connection 28 to the air springs. Increased hydraulic pressure at either end of the cylinder 12 due to spring deflections lifts one of the disc valves 16 and acts on the diaphragm 20 to close the valve 21. Upon release of the increased hydraulic pressure by the shock absorber piston the disc valve 16 closes and a bleed hole 19 therein permits the pressure acting on the diaphragm to escape slowly. Consequently the reservoir will only communicate with the air springs during prolonged spring deflections since at all times during oscillating motion of the shock absorber one of the valves 21 will be closed. The control units may be associated with a vane type shock absorber.
