Abstract

The invention comprises: compounds of the general formula <FORM:0921979/IV(a)/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or di-(lower alkyl)-amino group, R2 a halogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or di-(lower alkyl)-amino group, R3 a hydrogen or halogen atom and R4 a halogen atom or a lower alkyl or lower alkoxy group, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 representing a halogen atom and the word "lower" indicating a maximum of 4 carbon atoms) and their physiologically tolerable acid addition salts; the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriately substituted benzaldehyde or benzyl halide with an appropriately substituted benzyl cyanide in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent, and subjecting the resulting substituted acrylonitrile of the general formula <FORM:0921979/IV(a)/2> or substituted propionitrile of the general formula <FORM:0921979/IV(a)/3> to hydrogenation in an inert solvent in the presence of Raney nickel at 30-60 DEG C. and 50-150 atmospheres (gauge) pressure, or to reduction with lithium aluminium hydride in an inert organic solvent or, in the case of the propionitriles, with an alkali metal in ethanol, and in all cases, if desired, treating the product with an inorganic or organic acid to form an addition salt; and pharmaceutical preparations containing the products in admixture or conjunction with a pharmaceutically suitable carrier. The pharmaceutical preparations, which have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity, may be in the form of gelees, powders, ointments, pastes, mixtures requiring shaking, tinctures, solutions or suspensions.
