Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1034188/C2/1> wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R1 is a straight-chain alkyl group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms, except in the case of the 6-methyl-6-dehydro compounds, when R1 has 1 to 4 carbon atoms, compounds of formula <FORM:1034188/C2/2> and their 3-acetates, wherein X is as hereinbefore defined and R1 is a straight-chain alkyl group having, when X is a hydrogen atom, 2 to 4 carbon atoms and, when X is a methyl group, 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the preparation of compounds of the above formulae wherein R1 has in all cases 1 to 4 carbon atoms by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1034188/C2/3> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl group, in a hydroxyl-full solvent with a solution of an alkali metal in liquid ammonia and then with a straight-chain alkyl halide having 1 to 4 carbon atoms to give the desired pregnenolone derivative, and, if desired, subjecting these to an Oppenauer-type oxidation to give the desired progesterone derivatives. The progesterone derivatives of the invention have progestational activity and may be used in combination with a pharmaceutical carrier in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, for example as capsules, tablets, solutions or suspensions.
