Abstract

921,876. Mobile luffing-arm apparatus; suction devices for engaging loads. HILL BROS. GLASS CO. Ltd., and SIMON ENGINEERING (MIDLANDS) Ltd. April 18, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13613/60. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). Apparatus for handling rigid sheets such as panes of glass comprises a boom 11, which is luffably mounted on a turn-table 13 on a motor-driven wheeled chassis 10, and a boom 12 pivotally connected to the outer end of boom 11 and provided with a lifting head 14, hydraulic rams 8, 9 being provided for luffing the booms. The lifting head 14 comprises suction-operated pads 15 on arms 16 which are secured to a hub 23 rotatably mounted about an axis 26 on a bracket 20 which is pivoted to a cross-member 17. The crossmember 17 is mounted on a vertical pivot 18 and may be slewed by a motor 19 and a fluidpressure ram 21 controls the pivotal movement of the bracket 20, which is connected to a plate 22, rigid with the hub 23, by pins 25, the lower of which is removable, on the bracket 20 engaging in a slot 24 in the plate 22. A manually-operated clamp 27 is provided for securing the hub 23 in a predetermined angular position relative to the bracket 20. Controls for the motor 19 and ram 21 may be provided on the chassis and/or adjacent the lifting head. The lifting head 14 may be replaced by other, unspecified, load-engaging means.
