Abstract

921,233. Electric heating resistances. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 7, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 12904/60. Class 39 (3). A source of thermal radiation comprises an open-fronted vessel of refractory material containing a radiator element and provided with a gas inlet and with a screen of closely spaced fine refractory wires extending across the front of the vessel, the screen being such as to provide a barrier against the ingress of ambient air or gas whilst permitting thermal radiation to pass through it. As shown, one embodiment is a furnace having a casing 11 provided with a screen of fine iridium-platinum alloy wires 16 mounted in zig-zag fashion on tungsten rods 14, 15 across its open front. The rods 14, 15 are supported by blocks 13 of insulating material carried by a frame 12 of refractory material. The wires 16 may be electrically heated, terminals 17, 18 being provided for that purpose. The frame 12 is attached to the casing 11 by means of a single wing-nut 19 and is thus removable to give access to the interior of the furnace. Inert gas is supplied to the furnace through an inlet (not shown) to reduce oxidation and corrosion of electric heating elements (Fig. 2, not shown) within the furnace, the flow of gas from the furnace being restricted by the screen. A second embodiment and the heating elements included in both embodiments, are the same as those described in Specification 921,234.
