Abstract
582,246. Inclinometers. PRICE, D. R., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 20,1944, Nos. 1164/44 and 4202/45. [Class 97 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XXXIX] A thermo-electric instrument (see Group XXXVIII) for use on ships, military tanks, aircraft, &c., utilizes the change of electric resistance produced in a wire by the variable cooling effects of air convection currents as the inclination of the wire is changed. As shown in Fig. 1, a nickel wire grid 4 heated through leads 5 is located in a mica chimney 3 supported within a metal casing 1 by means of wires 2. The air convection -currents set up vary in intensity as the inclination of the chimney varies and, by their cooling effect on the grid 4, vary its resistance and the current passing therethrough, the greatest rate of change occurring when the chimney is at about 30 degrees to the horizontal. In a modified arrangement the grids of two inclined chimneys are externally connected in push-pull circuit to give an enhanced response to tilting. In a further modification, Fig. 4, inclined grids in the form of helices 4a are arranged in closed tubes 9 within a casing 1c and are connected to a thermionic amplifier 11 and across a balancing resistance 10 fed with alternating or direct current. To give greater sensitivity to the instrument, the casing may be lined with copper thermally connected to an external heat radiator. False response of the instrument due to spinning may be minimised by locating the heated grid near the top of its enclosure. The device may be used for electric amplification (see Group XXXIX).
