Abstract

Textile fibres of polyalkylenes, especially polypropylene, are dyed by depositing a dye thereon and then bringing the fibres into contact with the vapour of an organic liquid which is a solvent for the dye and a swelling agent for the fibres, the fibres being at a temperature which is so much below the temperature of the vapour that condensation of the organic liquid on the fibres takes place. The organic liquids specified are benzene, toluene, xylene, solvent naphtha, chloro or bromo derivatives of methane, ethane, propane, ethylene and propylene such as perchlorethylene, propylene dichloride and especially trichlorethylene. The dyes specified are substantially water-insoluble being azo dyes and a -arylamino-anthraquinones devoid of carboxylic or sulphonic acid groups. The dyes may be applied as aqueous dispersions from thickened solutions and the impregnated fibres may then be dried. Advantageously the fibres are exposed to the saturated vapour of trichlorethylene which is produced by boiling the liquid in a container which is open or partly open to the atmosphere, escape of the vapours being substantially prevented due to the high density of the vapour and by cooling the upper surfaces of the container. An example is given.
