Abstract

In the dyeing of textile materials comprising mixtures of protein and cellulose fibres with cold-dyeing reactive dyes at temperatures not exceeding 30 DEG C., the uptake of dye by the protein fibres is controlled by effecting the dyeing in the presence of a colourless, water-soluble organic compound containing an anionic solubilizing group. Suitable compounds, which may be applied to the textile before or during dyeing, are salts of naphthalene sulphonic acids, of alkylated benzene sulphonic acids, of alkylated naphthalene sulphonic acids, of condensation products of formaldehyde with naphthalene sulphonic acids, of sulphurized phenols, or of sulphonated or sulphated oils, fats or fatty alcohols. Dyeing may also be effected in the presence of acidbinding agents and neutral inorganic salts. When the dyed protein fibre is paler in shade than the dyed cellulose fibre, a second dyeing with a non-reactive dye having an affinity for the protein fibre may be applied. The process is applicable to textiles comprising mixtures of natural or regenerated cellulose fibres with natural or regenerated protein fibres. Suitable cold-dyeing reactive dyes are described in Specifications 209,723, 774,925 and 785,222. Examples are given.
