Abstract

1384176 Stain-proofing optically brightened materials CIBA-GEIGY AG 2 June 1972 [7 June 1971] 25927/72 Heading D1P Synthetic polyamide material, e.g. yarns and textiles, which has been treated with fluorescent whiteners is proofed against staining, i.e. the pick up of dyes, e.g. during laundry, by the application of a water-soluble fixing agent dispersed in an organic liquid containing up to 10% of water at a temperature of 20 to 120‹C. The fixing agent may be applied simultaneously with the fluorescent whitener or at a later stage. The treated materials may be partly or wholly composed of nylon 6, nylon 66, nylon 6, 10, nylon 11 or nylon 6, 6/6. Preferably the fixing agent is accompanied by an organo-soluble surfactant acting as a dispersing agent. The fixing agent is preferably a condensation polymer of one or more aryl compounds with formaldehyde, suitable aryl compounds are sulphones, especially diaryl sulphones having at least one phenoline group, and sulphonated aryl compounds. In example 1 4, 4' dihydroxydiphenylsulphone is sulphonated with concentrated sulphuric acid and then condensed with formaldehyde. Many dispersing agents are specified, in particular nonionic or anionic compounds obtained by the addition of ethylene oxide to long chain amines or alcohols or to phenols or fatty acid esters. The fluorescent whitener is preferably watersoluble. Specified classes of whitener are mono or di (sulphonic acid, sulphonamide or carboxylic acid) substituted 4, 4' bis (acylamino) stilbenes, 4, 4' bis-(triazinylamino)-stilbenes 4, 4' bis-(azoyl) stilbenes, stilbylnaphthatriazoles, bis- (benzoxazol-2-yl)-derivatives, monomethine cyanines, 2, 7-bis (aroylamino)-dibenzothiophene dioxides-1, 3 diarylpyrazolines, styrylbenzoxazoles, bis-styrylaryl compounds, bisbenzoxazolylarylene compounds, oxdiazole compounds or quaternary benzofuranylbenzimidazoles. Examples 1-3 disclose the simultaneous application of a solution of a fluorescent whitener and a dispersion of a fixing agent solution in a single organic solvent. Example 4 discloses treatment of polyamide filament yarn with fluorescent whitener in trichloroethylene followed by the application of fixing agent dispersed in benzene. It is also possible to apply an aqueous solution of the whitener, dry the fabric and apply fixing agent dispersed in an organic solvent. 0.1% to 10% by weight of fixing agent relative to the fibre material is used. The ratio of fixing agent to dispersing agent is between 1:100 and 1:2. Padding and exhaust processes may be used.
