Abstract
920,723. Automatic volume control. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 19, 1961 [July 7, 1960], No. 23796/60. Class 40 (4). In an amplifier comprising a transistor with. impedances in its emitter and collector paths, the collector path impedance is varied in accordance with the magnitude of a control signal so as to vary the gain of the amplifier. It is stated that the gain of such a transistor amplifier is equal to the ratio of the collector and emitter impedances so that alteration of either will alter the amplifier's gain. In Fig. 2, the collector circuit impedance of transistor T comprises transformer TR and transistor T2 connected as shown, so that application of a control voltage Vc to the base of T2 will cause the emitter-base current to change hence changing the emitterbase impedance and consequently the collector circuit impedance of T, with a resultant change of the amplifier gain. Alternatively the control voltage Vc may be applied across a semiconductor diode D (Fig. 3) so as to bias the latter in its conducting direction. Variation of Vc alters the impedance of D and hence the effective impedance in the collector circuit and hence the gain of transistor T.
