920,622. Typewriters &c. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Feb. 1, 1961, No. 3849/61. Class 100 (4). A printing device particularly for marking coded information on articles such as letters, comprises printing elements 2 mounted in a guide case 1 for displacement to effect impression. Each element 2 is urged by a spring 3 to an operative position but is normally restrained in an inoperative position by lever latches 4 controlled by electromagnets 16. Preferably, the elements 2 are arranged in five-unit rows and are operated to print with a 2 of 5 code by operation of a keyboard. Depression of a key or keys operates electromagnets appropriate for the code to be printed and thus releases the corresponding latches 4 from engagement with abutments 8 to allow the springs 3 to advance the appropriate elements 2. A trip key is now operated to engage a single cycle clutch to move the guide case 1 by a guiding arrangement 14 first towards the magnets 16 and then to effect impression aided by the springs 3 of the released elements 2. On return of the guide case 1 to its neutral position a resetting cam 15 engages a roller 12 of a lever 10 to cause a plate 9 to reset the released elements 2. Printing may be effected by magnetic ink or in colour for scanning by magnetic heads or photo-electric means.
