746,964. Typewriters &c. LORENZ AKT.- GES., C. Sept. 11, 1953 [Sept. 11, 1952], No. 25181/53. Class 100 (4). Type-wheel machines.-A typewriter, calculating, telegraph, or like printing-machine comprises a type-wheel 2, rotatable to position a type in printing position and which is axially shiftable in letter-spacing direction behind a paper sheet 3, a colouring arrangement, e.g. a ribbon 34, and a hammer 10 which moves axially in step with the type-wheel. The hammer strikes through the ribbon on to a paper 21 against the type-wheel so that the selected character is printed on the side of the sheet opposite to the type-wheel. The typewheel 2 is rotated by an aggregate motion selecting system and is aligned in position by a sprung roller on an arm 40 coacting with a notched disc 39 attached to the type-wheel. Letter-spacing.-The wheel is letter spaced along a shaft 1 by a rack or threaded spindle 7 which is rotated an appropriate amount and the wheel is returned by a spring after a pawl 8 is released from the spindle 7. Hammer-impression, arrangements.-The hammer 10 is similarly letter-spaced by movement of its mounting 29 transversely movable on a threaded spindle 13 and roller bar 11. The hammer is operated by a blade 27 extending the width of the travel of the hammer which is cocked by a cam mechanism and actuated by an adjustable tension spring 14. A resilient plate 37 separates the striker 35 from the actual hammer 10. Types. Case-shift arrangements.-The letters are arranged in one column on the type-wheel and the numerals, signs, &c. in another, case shift being effected by axial movement of the type-wheel.
