Abstract
909,749. Typewriters &c. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Aug. 19, 1960 [Aug. 20, 1959], No. 28782/60. Class 100 (4). [Also in Group XL (b)] A type-printing apparatus of the kind in which the type levers may print two or more characters comprises means for selecting which of the characters on the type lever is printed. The selection is made in accordance with one or more predetermined elements of the received code signal or with the position of a key bar set by the actuation of a key, and results in movement of the platen or the type basket or both. In one embodiment the platen 11 is carried by a carriage 10 which is capable of vertical movement under the action of cams 8, 9. A setting finger 4 is positioned in accordance with the first element of a received code signal and abuts either lever 17 or lever 18. When the carriage 10 is in the low position lever 27 abuts lever 21 of a pair of levers 20, 21 which tend to move to follow the contours of cam 3a. In operation shafts 1, 2 and 3 are continuously rotating. Assuming the various levers to be in the positions shown, as shaft 3 rotates levers 17, 20 and 18, 21 tend to move anticlockwise at the fall of cam 3a but they are prevented from so doing by finger 4 and lever 27 respectively. However, if the first code element has caused finger 4 to abut lever 18 levers 17 and 20 are free to move anti-clockwise, this action moving lever 23 which pulls on a cord 24 and releases a pawl 26. Hence shaft 6 rotates and the carriage rises to its high position. By the time the carriage has been raised levers 17, 20 and pawl 26 will have returned to the normal positions so that shaft 6 no longer rotates. Lever 27 now abuts lever 20 and the carriage will therefore stay in the high position until finger 4 is moved once more to abut lever 17. A substantially similar embodiment, which uses a key bar instead of selector finger 4 is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown). The carriage and platen are shown in detail in Fig. 5 (not shown).
