Abstract
933,635. Typewriters &c. OLYMPIA WERKE A.G. Feb. 10, 1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 4695/60. Class 100 (4). A control relay operated line feed device is provided with a control device which by means of a keyboard can be set to a programme which will stop the feed to allow printing in the desired lines. The control device also controls tabulation. Keys are provided to effect linespacing with or without carriage return by energizing a control relay which actuates a clutch to engage the carriage drawband. The control device comprises a stepping mechanism 700, Fig. 2, an arm 122 of which is stepped by operation of a magnet M 2 when a magnet M 3 has coupled it to a ratchet wheel 125, over contacts K201-K270 and a contact disc ZK. The contacts K201-K270 are connected by lines L201-L270 to a contact of a pair which can be opened by operation of a key of the keyboard. In a next position a spring 141 holds the arm 122 out of contact with any other contacts. After paper has been introduced into the machine in the usual way and the keyboard has been operated to open the pairs of contacts corresponding to the lines on which printing is desired a switch is closed and the magnet M 3 operates so that contact is made with the contact K201 and if the corresponding pair of contacts has not been opened, stepping will occur and the control relay will be operated to effect line feed which sequence will continue until a contact connected to an opened pair is reached at which point feed is stopped. After printing on the desired line the sequence will be repeated until the programme is completed and a contact O is reached which causes a relay Rv to operate to reset the keyboard and de-energize the magnet M 3 so that no contact is made with K201 when the arm 122 makes one further step and the mechanism regains its rest position. Keys and keyboards.-The keyboard comprises soft iron plates 2, 3, Fig. 4, connected by pins 4 which act as cores for coils 5. The keys 6 have associated insulating pins 7, pins 8 and springs 9 and on depression the corresponding pair of contacts 12, 13 are opened against the action of springs 11, 14 and the key 6 contacts a plate 10 in which position the initial air gap is so reduced that it is held in this position against the action of the spring 9 until rV 1 is opened to de-energize the coil 5 and re-set the keyboard. The keys may be provided with remote electrical control. Tabulation.-When line-spacing has been stopped in the desired line depression of a tabulation key causes a relay to operate to release the loose dog from the escapement. Tabulation movement occurs until a mark in the desired column is sensed and causes the relay to release and the loose dog to stop further escapement. Specification 845,388 is referred to.
