Abstract

920.507. Moulding ceramic materials. GLADDING McBEAN & CO. Nov. 16, 1959, No. 38840/59. Class 87(2). A method of moulding finely divided ceramic material, containing not less than 30% of particles passing a 60 mesh sieve, into a strip comprises passing the material downwardly by gravity to the nip of a pair of rollers travelling at the same speed, wherein the relationship between the thickness of the strip and the radius R of the rollers is R/R+T = 0À950 to 0À980 and continuously discharging the moulded strip. Compositions of ceramic materials and sieve sizes are given. In Fig. 1 the material is rolled by rollers 10, 101 and discharged on to a belt 16 where it is coated with glazing material from rollers 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and fed to a stamping machine 18. In Figs. 5 and 6 the rollers are worm driven and one roller 64 has end flanges whose height is between 1À5 and 4 times the nip gap. The material is discharged on to an adjustable guide 67 and thence to a transverse cutting knife 71, angularly adjustable to travel with the strip to cut squarely and operated electrically by a cam on a roller 75, and to side trimmers 81 and ploughs 85. The cutting knives 71, 85 may only score the strip which may be fed through rollers 97, 98, Fig. 8, to a roller 99 located beneath the nip of the rollers 97, 98 to break the strip across the score marks. The rollers 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, may be profiled to impress on the strip a pattern of tiling, Fig. 2 (not shown), and one roller, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be have protruding bevelled edges to form a chamfer 4 on the sides of the rolled strip, Curing ovens and cooling means are provided.
