Abstract

920,109. Pivoted knuckle vehicles couplers. NATIONAL CASTINGS CO. March 31, 1959 [March 31, 1958], No. 10900/59. Class 103(5). In standard E and F type pivoted knuckle couplers, Fig. 4, contact during buffing may occur at points H and J, the buffing surfaces 17, 18 failing to take the longitudinally acting buffing force which is then split into multidirectional forces such as Bl, B2, B3, and B4. In order to avoid wedging action, and to maintain a correct abutting relationship between the knuckle and the pocket, a clearance 8, Fig. 1, is provided in a standard F type modified according to the invention. This clearance should not exceed # inch in order that the lock clearance 75 may be sufficient to allow the lock 76 to drop when uncoupling, and the point for striking the 1¥ inch radius of the new surface 27 should be located at not less than 3<SP>7</SP>/ 16 inches and not more than 3# inches from the axis Y-Y. This dimension 3# inches is greater by about <SP>5</SP>/ 16 inch than in the standard F type. In Fig. 3 (not shown) is illustrated the changes in the pocket dimensions required for a standard E type and the new point for striking the 1¥ inches radius. The knuckles of the existing couplers are unchanged.
