Abstract
993,791. Railway vehicle automatic couplings. BUCKEYE STEEL CASTINGS CO. Dec. 11, 1961, No. 44257/61. Heading B7T. A knuckle type automatic coupler has a lock operating rotor comprising portions 26, 28, Figs. 1, 3 and 6, of elliptical and circular cross-sections 27, 29 respectively, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is otherwise shaped as shown, the rotor being rotated about its axis 20 by a hooked end of a conventional rod 19, and substantially all parts of the eye being below the axis 20 of rotation. In operation, should the coupler pull out from the vehicle to a position beyond that normally permitted by the draft gear, the rod 19 will not apply a counter-clockwise or unlocking torque to the rotor, the hook 42 being first moved upwardly by forces F2, F3 over the shoulder 36, Fig. 6, to lie on the flat surface 34 of the eye, and then, if the pull-out force is continued, the hook will be moved to the Fig. 7 position where it exerts a rearward pull F4 on the rotor eye, which force is below the rotational axis 20 of the rotor. In the inactive position of the rotor and rod as seen in plan view, Fig. 11 (not shown), there may be free play between the rotor and rod of 18 degrees in either direction from their axes aligned position.
