1484058 Automatic railway couplers MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 19 Dec 1974 [26 April 1974] 55020/74 Heading B7T A railway car coupler is of the type which comprises a knuckle 12, Fig. 1, pivoted to a coupler head 10, and a lock 18 connected through a link 24 and a rotor 30 to a rotor shaft 32, the rotor shaft 32 having an eye portion (34), Fig. 3 (not shown), to which an uncoupling rod (36) is connected to allow manual pivotting of the rotor shaft 32 which causes upward movement of the lock 18 which, in turn, initially unlocks the knuckle 12 and subsequently throws open the knuckle 12 by means of a thrower 38, the coupler being characterized in that it further comprises an automatic mechanism operative during uncoupling from a mated coupler to cause automatic pivotting of the rotor shaft 32 and hence unlocking and opening of the knuckle 12. The said automatic mechanism comprises a lever member 42, Fig. 2, biased by a spring assembly 44 for pivotting about the axis of a hub portion 61 such that when during uncoupling from a mated coupler, the knuckle of the mated coupler moves to release pressure on the front face 46b of a plunger 46, the lever member 42 pivots to cause a roller 64 to engage a cam 40 and effect pivotting of the rotor shaft 32. The railway car coupler may be of the A.A.R. Standard "F" type. As illustrated, the lever member 42 comprises: an arm 82, Fig. 8, bearing a trunnion 82a for engagement in a slot of the plunger 46; an arm 62 which has a bifurcated end carrying the roller 64; and a pair of arms 70 having recessed bearing portions 70a for receiving trunnions (74a), Fig. 4 (not shown), of the spring assembly 44.
