Standard E pivoted knuckle railway coupling, having the unlocking and opening of knuckle 12 achieved through the actuation of a rotor lever 26 by means of a depending arm 40a of a lever 40 keyed to horizontal shaft 42 is provided with a spring assembly 50 for rotation of the shaft in a counter clockwise direction, said assembly comprising a first seat 52 with integral trunnions 52a supported in bearings 58 in the coupler head, a second seat 54 with integral trunnions 54a supported by a lever 60 secured to shaft 42 and a pair of coiled springs 56 between the seats, said seat 52 having a stem 52c which passes through an opening 54c in seat 54. The springs are compressed to their maximum extent when the knuckle is in its closed position by the clockwise rotation of shaft 42 by arm 40a thereby swinging lever 60 forward. During uncoupling lever 60 is rotated by the spring assembly to rotate shaft 42 anticlockwise causing arm 40a to engage a cam arm 44 to effect rotation of the rotor lever in a clockwise direction. To remove the spring assembly a pry bar 66 is inserted in an opening 68 in element 26a of lever 26. Springs 56 are compressed by rearward movement of the bar until a pin 72 can be inserted in hole 52d in stem 52c. After the pry bar has been released lever 60 may be swung rearwardly sufficiently to permit removal of the spring assembly.
