The coin shoot of a coin-freed telephone has a wire spring 18, Fig. 3b, which is pressed back along a smooth pin 19 by a falling coin 20 until the coin closes a spring contact set 12, 13 and comes to rest on a stop 22; any tendency of the coin to rebound and operate another spring contact set is restrained by the spring being forced upwards into a notched plate 11d. As shown in Fig. 5, a coin slot 33 accepts two or more sizes of coins, the largest being gauged by an exchangeable gauge 33a, and the coins rest on an upper stop 37 carried by a lever 35. When a deposit electromagnet 36 is actuated, the lever tilts to withdraw the stop 37, insert a coin insertion stop 33b and insert lower stops 22, 41 into the path of the coins falling down the shoot 50. Each coin operates a spring contact set 39, 42 according to its size and is released to a coin box 49 when the electromagnet 36 releases. A plate 47, Fig. 4, is bent obliquely across the upper part of the shoot 50 and by a wedge effect prevents smaller coins from bouncing in the coin shoot.
