Abstract
1,055,042. Coin sorting and testing. NATIONAL REJECTORS Ltd. Feb. 17, 1965 [March 2, 1964], No. 6821/65. Headings G4V and G4X. A coin tester is arranged to accept coins of a given resistivity, and hard coins of greater resistivity, but to reject coins of less resistivity and soft coins of greater resistivity. In particular, it will accept silver and cupronickel, but reject copper, zinc, brass or lead. The apparatus described sorts coins of the diameters of dimes, nickels, and quarters, an inserted dime dropping through two cradles to a conventional dime tester, and an inserted nickel being arrested by the second cradle, subjected to a washer test, and tilted on to a runway where it is subjected to retardation by a magnet, and whence it passes to a rebound tester substantially as in Specification 740,794. A quarter sized coin is arrested by the first cradle, subjected to a similar washer test, and tilted on to runway 174, whence it passes through the field of magnet 118. A silver coin will be slowed to a predetermined extent, and follow path 200, striking a separator 95 on lever 94 pivoted at 96, so that the lever tilts as shown in broken lines, the coin passing to the right of the separator to acceptance path 192. A cupronickel coin will be little slowed, and will hit a rebound surface 85, and being hard, will rebound to hit a second rebound surface, which may be the hardened end 176 of the runway or a separate member. The coin rebounds again to the right of the separator and is accepted. A zinc or brass coin will be slowed to a degree between cupronickel and silver, and will hit the lower part of surface 85 a glancing blow, being deflected to the left of separator 95 to a reject path 194. A copper coin will be more slowed than silver, and will drop to the left of separator 95. A lead coin will be little slowed, but its rebound from surface 85 will be too small for it to engage surface 176, and it will fall between that surface and separator 95 to path 194.
