In a coin-counting machine of the type in which coins are pushed by a driving-wheel past a counting mechanism into a holder, the driving-wheel being raised after a predetermined number of coins have been counted, the coinholder is rockable to remove the coins, means operated by the return of the coin holder to the coin-receiving position being effective to lower the driving-wheel into its coin-counting position. As described, coins 3 to be counted are fed by a rubber driving-wheel 1 past a star-wheel 5 which operates a counter (not shown). The star-wheel 5 is fixed to its spindle 8 which carries a pawl 9 engaging a toothed ratchet wheel 10 carrying a pin 11 which, when a predetermined number of coins has been counted, moves a slidable plate 12 to release a ram 13 for upward movement under the action of a spring 14, thereby raising the wheel 1 from the coins. The counted coins fall into a holder 15 comprising a tube closed at one end 16. The holder 15 which is at an angle to the vertical, is rotated clockwise through 90 degrees to remove the coins therein. Alternatively, the holder 15 may be vertical and inverted to remove the coins. The holder 15 is then returned to its original position, thereby rotating a ratchet-member 26 to drive a co-operating ratchet-member 29 carrying a cam 31 co-operating with a bell-crank lever 33, an arm 34 of which engages a clot in a lift-plate 36 fixed to the ram 13 which is thus depressed against the action of the spring 14 to re-engage the wheel 1 with the coins.
