Abstract

919,973. Sewing machines. ABBEY, A. (Husqvarna Vapenfabriks A.B.). July 8, 1959, No. 23527/59. Class 112. In a zig-zag sewing machine having a plurality of rotary pattern cams, a cam selector handle, a stitch-width regulating handle, a work-feed regulating handle, and a panel provided with diagrams of the ornamental seams producible by the machine, the diagrams are associated with different colours, and at least the cam selector handle is associated with correspondingly coloured marks. As shown, alternative packs of control cams, each pack comprising, four needle bar-controlling cams 7 and two feed-controlling cams 8 are fixable on a driven shaft which permanently carries two further needle bar-controlling cams. A rotary cam selector handle 6 is adjustable to six positions, in four of which the cams 7 are alternatively selected, and in the other two of which the permanent cams are alternatively selected. The arrangement is also such that in two of the said four positions, one or other of the cams 8 is also selected to combine feed control with needle bar control. The machine is provided with four packs, and is also provided with a panel 10 divided into four sections 15 to 18 each of which contains four diagrams 11 to 14 showing the seams corresponding to one of the cam packs. The diagrams in an individual section are differently coloured, but the diagrams occupying the same relative positions in the sections are of the same colour.Handle 6 is provided on its periphery with four circles 21 to 24 which are colouredto correspond with the respective diagrams 11 to 14, and which co-operate with a fixed mark 25 to select a diagram. Handle 6 is also provided with seam diagrams 19 and 20 corresponding to the permanent cams. A rotary handle 4 regulates the stitch width, and a rotary handle 5 regulates the work feed. It is stated that all the seams normally require a width of 4 mm., and accordingly a circle 28 on handle 4, co-operating with a fixed mark 26, is divided into four sections coloured in agreement with the respective diagrams 11 to 14. It is also stated that seams 11 and 12 normally require a stitch length of ¥ mm. while seams 13 and 14 normally require a stitch length of 3 mm. Accordingly, a circle on handle 5. co-operating with a fixed mark 27 is divided into sections 31 and 32 coloured in agreement with the diagrams 11 and 12, while a further circle on handle 5 is divided into sections 33 and 34 coloured in agreement with diagrams 13 and 14. An opening 35 is provided below each of the sections 15 to 18, and a bar 36, marked with four coloured panels 37, is slidably arranged behind the openings. A pivoted shaft 40 carries at its respective ends arms 39 and 41. A spring 43, acting on bar 36, engages a pin 42 thereon with arm 41 to bias arm 39 into engagement with a flange 38 on the selected cam pack of such a diameter that a panel 37 appears in an opening 35 positioned under that one of the sections 15 to 18 corresponding to the seams producible by the selected cam pack, the colour of said panel agreeing with that of a respective line 44 extending beneath the section. Cam pack selection may be effected alternatively either by colouring the end face of each pack in agreement with that of the corresponding line 44, or by marking the end faces with coloured diagrams. corresponding to the diagrams of the related sections, or by marking each end face with a symbol such as a letter corresponding to a like symbol associated with the related section.'
