Abstract
919,889. Supply systems for discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 16, 1961 [March 16, 1960], No. 9322/60. Class 38 (4). A ballast resistor for use in ah electric lighting circuit arrangement comprising one or more discharge lamps and a control gear housing, is formed by a resistance wire insulated with a heat resisting material and which is embodied in cabling carrying the lamp supply current. Cabling 3 used to connect fluorescent tube heaters 2 to a control gear housing 4 containing the usual tube starting apparatus embodies a ballast resistor 7 formed from resistance wire wound on a heat-resisting core of insulating material such as asbestos or glass fibre and which is similarly sheathed. The right-hand section of cabling shown includes an insulated stranded copper conductor 8 together with the resistance wire in a common sheath. Starting of the fluorescent tube 1 may be facilitated by the use of metallic strip 9 forming an artificial earth and connected to the mains supply S within the housing through a high resistor 10 and a capacitor 11.
