Coal falling from a shoot K is swept by hot combustion gases from an inlet S<SP>1</SP> so that fine particles of coal are carried up an inverted V- shaped passage V, P and delivered separately to a travelling grate. A conical shoot K, Fig. 2, is fed by a conveyer R so that fuel is loosened before it enters the shoot, or a swinging shoot may be used. In a modification, the shoot is replaced by a coaling car F, Fig. 6, which moves to-and-fro across the width of the grate.
