Abstract
919,552. Making pipes and tubes; altering physical properties; extruding. ASHTON (DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd., N. C. Jan. 20, 1961 [Jan. 28, 1960], No. 3051/60. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A single phase aluminium bronze containing 4 to 8¢% A1 is subjected to hot working, e.g. hammering or rolling at a temperature not exceeding 950‹ C. and continued down to a temperature of 750‹ C. to produce a deformation of at least 20% prior to a hot extrusion and then a cold drawing process. In an example, an 8 inch diameter billet of aluminium bronze containing 7.5% A1 and 2.8% Fe is hammered at 950‹ C. to 5 inch diameter, machined to 4.7 inch diameter, drilled and extruded at 850‹ C. into a shell using a pressure of the order of 2200 tons per sq. inch. The shell is processed into tubes by cold drawing.
