[Also in Group XVII] A machine for handling bottles by a grab head carrying a group of grippers which are arranged to grip the necks or closures of a group of bottles and to place them into a crate by relative movement between the head and the crate is characterized by the fact that the grab head has means for gripping bottles spaced apart in one direction and touching each other in rows in a second direction to bunch them closer together into mutually touching relationship and to hold them so bunched during their entry into at least the mouth of the crate. The bottles b are fed to the grab head by a feed device a with plates c separating them into rows. The grippers are formed by pairs of parallel rods 4 mounted in slotted plates 5 slidable on rods 5a (not shown), 5b on a carrier 1 relatively to which the rods 4 can be moved by pneumatic or other means to grip and release the bottles. Studs 7, Fig. 5, connect the plates 5 to a bar or link 6 secured to the carrier 1. The two inner rows of the plates 5 on each side of the centre line of the head are connected to the outer row by the studs 7 passing through slots 12 in a link 11. A piston cylinder 13 is mounted on one end plate 5 and its piston rod 14 is secured to the opposite end plate 5 so that the outer rows of grippers can be moved towards each other in the direction of the arrows A, Fig. 1, the links 11 transmitting the motion to the inner rows of grippers to bunch the bottles together. If an odd number of rows of bottles are to be packed the centre row may be held stationary in the head and the other rows bunched thereto. In a modification the rows of grippers are moved towards an outer stationary row of grippers.
