Abstract

1,158,847. Suction lifting devices; bottle crating machines. J. J. SHUTTLEWORTH. 18 Oct., 1966 [29 March, 1966], No. 46504/66. Headings B8C and B8H. A vacuum head 10 comprises a number of vacuum cups each with a substantially inextensible and incompressible flexible tube 14 with a cup having a cylindrical recess 16 arranged to form a seal about the neck of a bottle 18 to be lifted. As shown in Figs. 1B, 1C non- aligned bottles 18 fed by a conveyer (not shown), against a stop 20 are engaged by the vacuum cups, the flexibility of the tubes 14 allowing sealing engagement by the recesses 16. On lifting the head 10 the bottles 18 hang under gravity and are thereby aligned for feeding through pockets 23 of a grid 22 into pockets 25 of a box 24 after removal of movable platform 19. Figs.. 2, 3 (not shown) illustrate embodiments suitable for long-necked bottles. Fig. 4 shows a vacuum cup suitable for short-necked bottles where a separate flexible tube 36 and a cup 37 are coupled by a hollow bolt 38.
