Abstract

[Also in Group XXX] In apparatus for handling bottles, packages and other articles where the articles are required to be formed into groups of predetermined configuration for subsequent transfer by a gripping device, e.g. into a packing case, rods or bars are rockable into and out of the gaps or interstices between the articles to form a frame which compels the articles to form regularly aligned rows. As shown the bottles are carried by a conveyer belt 50 and arranged in longitudinal rows by guides 7, 8, 9. The bottles are then divided into spaced batches of the required number to fill a packing case (not shown) by a pair of stop members 10, 14 which are alternately lowered into the path of the bottle by linkage 16 operated by a cam 19. Each stop member consists of a bar 11 having rods 12 depending therefrom. The spaced batches are released by the member 14 in timed relationship with the movement of an endless chain carrying at intervals a set of four mounting members 33, Fig. 4, each of which includes a pair of lugs apertured at 38 for the reception of a longitudinal pin on which a block is rotatable. Bars or rods 39-42 are secured to the four blocks of each set. The bars or rods are rocked about the pins as the chain moves by the co-operation of rollers on the blocks with a cam track having twisted sections at the commencement and end of the upper run. As a result the bars or rods are rocked into the interstices between the bottles to form a frame which holds the bottles in the desired configuration while travelling along, carried by the belt 50. The batches of bottles are continuously removed by an overhead travelling gripper device 49 of known type travelling in step with the bottles as the latter are seized and removed for transfer into a packing case.
