Abstract
919,230. Pipe couplings. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Dec. 11, 1961 [Dec. 9,1960], No. 42497/60. Class 99(1). In a releasable coupling 10 for liquefied gas conduits of the kind in which at least one member forming part of the coupling is required to slide upon and relative to another member forming part of the coupling, both when the coupling is released after use and when it is re-engaged for further use, to prevent ice formation internally of the coupling, a bleed of gas is deliberately provided from the liquid-carrying bore of the coupling to a clearance space 48 between the relatively slidable members so that the space is purged by the gas. As shown, the coupling comprises a tubular member 12 provided with a spring-loaded check valve 75 which is opened by engagement of the member with a fixed coupling member 23, the two members being connected by a bayonet joint the pins 28 of which are fixed in a sleeve 26; the latter also has pins 31 which engage in cam grooves 32 formed in a sleeve 33 mounted on the member 12, a compression spring 34 urging the sleeve 33 rearwardly of the member 12 and against a shoulder 35. Springs 37, 38 are interposedbetween a flange 42 of the sleeve 33 and the sleeve 26 to bias these sleeves to the uncoupled position thereof. A sleeve 40 serving as a rotatable handgrip is secured by an internal flange 41 thereof to the flange 42. In operation, the pins 28 of the sleeve 26 are engaged in the bayonet slots of the member 23 and the sleeve 40 is rotated to cause the sleeve 33 to rotate relatively to the member 12 and the stationary sleeve 26 and to move forwardly together with the member 12 until the latter is in liquid-tight sealing contact with the member 23. A bleed passage 46, adjustable by a screw 49 to regulate the effective size thereof, connects the bore 13 of the member 12 with a clearance space 48 between that member and the sleeve 33 so that the space is purged by a seepage of the gas which is flowing in liquid state through the coupling; an additional bleed 70 passage is provided in the member 12. Resilent sliding seals 55, 60 and 63 prevent escape of gas externally of the coupling.
