[Also in Groups XXXV and XL (a)] In a system for maintaining constant the density of a suspension of powder in a liquid medium (see Group XXXV), the density determines the height of a float 12, Fig. 1, to which is attached a ferromagnetic core 13 which varies the inductance of a coil 15. The change in inductance may be used to modulate the amplitude or frequency of the sine wave output of an oscillator 16, or it may disturb the balance of an A.C. bridge. The resulting signal is used to operate an on/off control valve. If the level of the suspension may vary the coil 15 is carried on a large float. In the system, the viscosity of the suspension also may be kept constant, the detector comprising two coaxial cylinders 30, 32, Fig. 3, between which the suspension is drawn up by a pump 37. The inner cylinder 30 is driven at constant speed while the outer is constrained by a spring 38. A contact 39 engages either of two adjustable fixed contacts 40, 41 to operate a fluid valve at upper and lower limits of viscosity respectively, or alternatively there may be only one fixed contact.
