Abstract
903,884. Viscometers. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORPORATION. Nov. 29, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 40923/60. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] Apparatus for determining the viscosity of a fluid X, e.g. concrete slurry at high temperatures and pressures, comprises a well 9 in a body of non-magnetic material containing the fluid and an iron bob 11 which may be acted on by an electromagnet 27 and which (when it hits the top or bottom 13, 14 of cavity 9) produces a sound wave picked up by a transducer 23. The fluid is subjected to pressure medium Z through valve 24B and is surrounded by a heater 26. In operation, electromagnet 27 is energized at regular intervals causing bob 11 to rise and then fall again due to gravity. When the bob ceases to hit the lower surface, i.e. when the viscosity has reached a predetermined level, a mark is made on a recorder and a second lower electromagnet 28 of the same ampere turns/inch is energized alternately with electromagnet 27. When the bob fails to hit the top surface 13 another mark is made on the recorder and when viscosity has increased sufficiently to prevent the bob 11 hitting either surface a final mark is made on the recorder.
