Abstract
918,358. Tin-plate. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. July 27, 1961 [Aug. 5, 1960], No. 27303/61. Class 41. The tin coating of electro-tinned low-carbon steel strip is reflowed, to improve the coating corrosion resistance, by heating the strip, substantially isothermally, above the melting-point of tin, 450 F., but not above 475 F., to " reflow " or brighten its surface; it is heated to this temperature in 0.3 to 0.4 seconds and maintained at temperature for from 1 to 3 seconds. Low-carbon steel strip 10, electrolytically coated with tin passes forward round guide rolls 12, 13, 17 and 18. An induction heating unit 14 raises the temperature rapidly to from 450 to 475 F., and the strip passes between rolls 12 and 17 receiving supplementary heating by electrical connections 19 to compensate for atmospheric cooling; muffle 20 serves to reduce heat losses and may supply supplemental heat from electric resistors or fuel-fired radiant tubes. Supplementary heating of the strip maintains its temperature substantially constant. The strip may be further heated in a unit 15 to a slightly higher temperature, to, say, 470 F., to ensure thorough fusion of the tin coating prior to entering water tank 16 where the temperature drops to 212 F. With unit 15 in use isothermal heating is restricted to 1 to 2 seconds to overcome excessive alloy formation.
