Abstract
917,381. Stuffing-box substitutes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 13, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6160/61. Class 122 (5). A valve spindle 1 is sealed in its housing 2, Fig. 1, by means of axially disposed bushes 3, each containing a ring 8 made up of four arcuate pieces 8a, 8b, Fig. 2, which are interlocked at their abutting ends in such a manner that, under the influence of a radial force, any one piece is free to move outwardly within the bush but is held against inward movement by the abutting ends of adjacent pieces. The radial force may be caused by a solid particle getting between the spindle and the ring. The ring pieces 8a are formed at their ends with rightangled recesses in which are received the correspondingly pointed ends of the pieces 8b. The four pieces are normally held as a sliding fit on the spindle by spring clips or circlips 11. Each ring is retained axially between a flange 9 of its corresponding bush and that of an adjacent bush. The bushes 3 have varying external diameters and are mounted with a tight fit in the housing 2 between a shoulder 5 and a retaining plate 6. Threads 10 are provided for facilitating removal of the bushes by means of a tool.
