Abstract

1365576 Joint-making packing COMMISSAKIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 48241/72 Addition to 1247968 Heading F2B The seal of the parent Specification 1,247,968 is modified by providing a T-section annular spring 18, Fig. 4, instead of a rectangular one and a different form of recess 78 for housing the spring and the deformable annular packing 10, 12. The annular spring 18, Fig. 5, may be prestressed radially within the recess as by forcing it over a shoulder. When the two parts to be sealed are brought together, the packing rings 10, 12, Fig. 3, slide over one another to contract the spring 18; similarly in Fig. 4 when the two parts to be sealed are brought together the spring 18 is first contracted by movement of the spring over the shoulder and then by the packings rings housed in the recess 78. The spring may be heated or cooled before assembly to aid prestressing. A flange of the spring 18 may be both conical and cylindrical and may be retained on the shoulder by the cylindrical portion; alternatively, both the spring and shoulder have corresponding conical surfaces such that the spring is wedged in position when the two parts to be sealed are brought together. The spring may be constructed from segments, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) held together by dowels (81) and with the interposition of shims (83).
