Abstract
811,801. Stuffing-box substitutes. AUDLEY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 15, 1957 [July 18, 1956], No. 22211/56. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] A gland for a rotatable spindle, for example the actuating spindle c of a rotary plug valve, comprises a sealing ring h located between an axially adjustable bush d surrounding the spindle and removably fitted in a bore a in the spindle housing b and a closure member or flange e on the spindle normally spaced from a seating j on the inner end of the bore a but co-operating therewith to prevent leakage when the bush is removed to renew the sealing ring h. The flange e is connected by a dog coupling with the plug g and urged outwardly by a spring k. The sealing ring h may be of rubber and is housed in a recess either in the bush, as shown, or in the flange e which has a conical face i to engage the seating j. Additional sealing rings m may be provided in grooves n in the bush and a ball thrust bearing may be fitted between the sealing ring and the bush to minimize frictional resistance.
