A padding machine comprises a hide conveyer in the form of an endless rubber belt 1 having a horizontal upper run on which hides to be sprayed with a liquid finishing material are arranged symmetrically about the centre line of the belt while mounted in a machine frame 5 above the hide conveyer 1 is a pad conveyer which includes a pair of endless chains 6 spaced one above the other and each passed round sprockets 7 mounted on two vertical shafts 8, one of which is arranged on each side of the hide conveyer. Cross-heads 9 extend vertically between the chains 6 and each supports a vertically slidable rod 10 which carries a replaceable pad 11 of plush-covered rubber at its lower end with rounded lower working surfaces or flat circular working surfaces. Two cam tracks 12 are so arranged that the pads are lowered on to the hides carried by the hide conveyer 1 as the pads approach the centre line of the hide conveyer and are lifted clear of the hides and of the hide conveyer as the pads arrive at the side edge of the hide conveyer. The pads 11 are pressed on the hides by their own weight and the weight of the slidable rods 9. The hides tend to hold their position on the conveyer because the pads are arranged close to each other and because the hides are always engaged by pads moving in opposite directions (shown by arrows 14 and 15 in Fig. 2), since the two runs of the pad conveyer traverse the hides in opposite directions. The machine frame 5 is conveniently supported on four levelling screws 20, only one of which is shown in the drawings.
