Abstract

917,160. Supporting filaments in lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 20, 1961 [Nov. 18, 1960], No. 39832/60. Class 39 (2). A high-intensity source of light or heat consists of a tungsten filament supported by refractory metal clamps gripping the filament at the ends- and at at least one intermediate point. The intermediate elamp or clamps may be resiliently mounted by tensioning means to prevent sagging of the filament. In the form shown, the filament 1 consists of a length of tungsten strip doubled on itself to form a hairpin loop, the ends being clamped between pairs of cheeks 2, 3 of molybdenum and the bend by a molybdenum clamp comprising two halfcylindrical rods 4, 5 united by rivets 6, 7 on either side of the filament. The filament may be bent into a series of loops and clamped at both ends and at each bend, the clamps at alternate bends being biased to maintain tautness. In a modified form of clamp, two flat molybdenum plates are secured together by a mild steel nut and bolt.
