916,912. Hydraulic intensifiers. TRYTHALL, W. J. C. April 21, 1959 [April 22, 1958], No. 12759/58. Class 69 (2). A combined air and hydraulic apparatus for operation of a machine, such as a press, comprises a cylinder 1 having a piston 7 adapted to be operated by air to move its rod 8 into a bore 9 in a work ram 2 to displace hydraulic fluid therefrom into an annular space 10 between the ram and a pressure pot 3 and apply a pressure stroke to the ram, and a second annular space 11 for the admission of air under pressure to retract the work ram 2 and piston 7. Air is supplied to the upper surface of the piston 7 which moves downwardly and the rod 8 displaces the hydraulic fluid in the bore 9 through radial passages 12 into the space 10 between seals 16 retained in position by plates 15a, 15b secured to the pressure pot 3 and ram 2, respectively, to provide the ram to which the tool is secured with an intensified pressure. The ram is retracted by air pressure supplied to the space 11 and the liquid is displaced from the space 10 to return the piston to its uppermost position. In alternative embodiments, the annular space 10 may be formed by a flexible diaphragm assembly or a ring or tyre moulded in rubber-like material.
