In a steam-cooled heavy water moderated reactor, for use in a marine vessel, means are provided to prevent the reactivity rising above the critical value in the event of the vessel sinking. A heated liquid, inert to sea-water, is injected into the reactivity controlling channels which solidifies and prevents the entry of seawater. The solidifying liquid is a high melting point hydrocarbon, for example, diphenyl, metaterphenyl or ortho-terphenyl to which a neutron absorber is added, for example an organoboron, organo-lithium or organo-cadmium compound. Alternatively, a finely divided absorber may be dispersed in the hydrocarbon. Specification 916,325 is referred to.
