A method of controlling a liquid-metal cooled reactor comprises mixing with the coolant a proportion of a neutron-absorbing material. The invention is described with reference to a fast reactor in which long-term reactivity control to compensate for the gradual effect of fuel burn-up and variations in xenon level is achieved by mixing with the liquid-metal coolant one per cent by volume of a neutron-absorbing material to form a homogeneous mixture. The preferred material is lithium, but other materials may include boron or boron or lithium compounds. Short term control is achieved by control rods and by passing a neutron-absorbing fluid in a closed circuit through the core.
