Abstract

1280366 Controlling reactors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 25 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968] 47298/69 Addition to 1253912 Heading G6C The reactor core of parent Specification is modified in that there is disposed in the immediate vicinity of at least a portion of the burnable poison a nuclear fuel having a fission cross-section which is larger than the fission cross-section of nuclear fuel disposed at a greater distance from the burnable poison. This is preferably achieved by having those pellets of the fuel elements containing a burnable poison formed of a Gd-Pu mixture prepared in a manner similar to the Gd-U mixture of the prior patent, the remaining pellets being formed of UO 2 . Natural or depleted U may be used with the Gd-Pu mixture as a diluent, or other suitable materials such as Al 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 may be used for this purpose. The Gd-Pu mixture is in oxide form. Pu-burnable poison combinations other than mixtures may be used, e.g. the burnable poison may be in the form of discrete particles, lumps or wires in predetermined segments of the fuel elements with the Pu contained in the fuel adjacent to the burnable poison. The use of Pu-fuel in conjunction with the burnable poison improves the local power distribution and the control margin, as well as providing an effective means for the utilization of Pu-fuel.
