Abstract

An enriched nuclear fuel element is made by forming a compact of the basic fuel ingredient, impregnating the compact with a solution of enrichment material, and drying and converting the enrichment material to metallic oxide. For example, uranium dioxide is formed into pellets and impregnated with a solution of plutonium nitrate which is converted to PuO 2 by heating. Impregnation may be effected with the pellets in the "green" state or after sintering and grinding. Pellets having different degrees of enrichment may be made and arranged at different positions in a reactor core. Reference is also made to the preparation of mixtures of oxides of Th and Pu, Th and U enriched in U235, and Th or natural U and U233.
