Abstract
1,159,520. Nuclear fuel. W. R. GRACE & CO. 12 July, 1968 [25 Sept., 1967], No. 33452/68. Heading G6C. A process for preparing a nuclear fuel comprising the oxides of at least two actinide metals consists in contacting porous microspheres of a fertile material with a fissionable material in fluid phase to impregnate the microspheres, and then converting the fissionable material to insoluble form. This process may be accomplished by impregnating the microspheres with a sol or with an aqueous solution of a salt of the fissionable component followed by conversion to the oxide in the pores of the matrix by sintering. The microspheres can also be impregnated with the additive in gaseous form, e.g. PuF 6 or UF 6 . The fertile matrix materials may be natural or depleted urania (U-238) alone or in admixture with thoria; alternatively, thoria may be used alone. The fissionable component may be urania (U-233 or U-235) or plutonia.
