Abstract

916,258. Refining iron. TREADWELL CO. Inc., M. H. May 8, 1961, No. 16677/61. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] Molten iron is converted into steel by charging the molten iron from a blast furnace into a mobile converter at a first station, moving the mobile converter to a second station where the charge is refined into steel by introducing a blast of oxygen into or upon the surface of the charge, and moving the mobile converter to a third station for discharging the steel, e.g. by tapping into a ladle or mould. As shown, the mobile converter 10a, which is mounted on trucks adapting the converter for movement along a track 26, is provided with one or more top openings through which molten iron is charged and one or more oxygen lances 36a are inserted during the refining, the lances together with hoods 68 and ducts 70 for leading off exhaust gases being removable to permit free movement of the mobile converter from the second station. Preferably the mobile converter is rotatable about a horizontal axis by means of a reversible motor mounted on one of the trucks, and has an oblique lance-receiving top opening 64 towards one end and a gas-exhausting top opening 66 at the opposite end, each opening into the hoods 68, with means being carried on one of the trucks for rooking the converter automatically during refining, such as a snap-type reversing switch 63 connected to the reversible motor in interfering relation to lugs 67 on the end of the converter. To assist agitation of the charge 60 during rocking, the refractory lining of the converter may include radially inwardly extending rigid projections 74. For discharging, the mobile converter is tilted so that the steel is tapped through a hole 48a and slag removed through the opening 66.
