A refrigerator has a butter storage compartment containing a heater and openings or passages for the convection circulation of air over the heater and through the compartment. The refrigerator (Fig. 1, not shown) has a door 14 comprising an outer metal panel and an inner panel 23 of synthetic plastic material in which the butter compartment is formed. As shown, this compartment is divided into large and small chambers 41 and 42 respectively by a vertical partition 31 integral with a panel 32 closing the front of chamber 42. Chamber 42 contains an electric heater element 51 wound on an insulating strip 48 which is screwed to two studs 47 riveted to the partition. The heater is controlled by a switch 44 having an operating lever 46, and the electric supply is carried by wires 54 and 57 through one of the door hinges. The large chamber 41 contains a removable butter dish 60 having legs 62 and is closed by a door 29. Heated air from chamber 42 circulates by natural convection through an upper opening 36 in the partition 31, over the butter, under the butter dish, and back to chamber 42 through a lower opening 37. The heater 51 may have sections of different heating intensity controlled by the appropriate number of settings of the switch 44.
