915,208. Axial flow gas turbine and compressor casings. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. Feb. 23 1961 [Feb. 29, 1960], No. 7048/60. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). An axial flow gas compressor or gas turbine has an outer casing split longitudinally in a plane containing the rotor axis, the two parts of the casing being provided adjacent their abutting edges with external lugs by means of which the two parts are clamped together, the lugs being spaced apart and leaving substantial circumferential areas of casing of uninterrupted circular external contour, the longitudinal edge portions of the two parts of the casing being provided with thickened portions, formed thereon in a manner not interrupting the circular external contour, or applied thereto, and carrying the abutting faces, at least one of each of the abutting faces having a longitudinal groove to receive deformable sealing material. The outer casing 1 of an axial flow gas compressor or gas turbine is split in a plane containing the longitudinal axis of the rotor. Each part of the casing has a number of external lugs 20 by which the two parts of the casing are clamped together. The abutting edges of the parts of the casing, which may be thickened with ribs 22 secured by brazing or by an adhesive such as an epoxide resin, carry longitudinal grooves 23 into which may be placed a strip of plastically deformable sealing material such as soft aluminium 25 to provide a gas-tight seal. The ribs 22 may be formed integrally with the easing. Each part of the casing has integral ribs 10 provided with axially facing grooves 11 which engage with ribs 14 on semi-cylindrical inner casings 13. The inner casings 13 have one or more rows of slots to carry the outer ends of stator blades which are secured therein by brazing or heat resisting adhesives such as epoxy resins. The compressor may have adjustable inlet guide, as described in Specification 913,147. The blade roots may extend beyond the inner casing and be ground so as to just clear the outer casing to resist relative movement between the inner and outer casing. Ribs 50 may also be used for this purpose.
