Abstract

1,099,501. Steam turbines. MERZ & McLELLAN SERVICES Ltd. May 11, 1965 [May 12, 1964], No. 19808/64. Heading F1T. The low-pressure stages of an axial flow steam turbine have the stator vanes 13, 14 provided adjacent their radially outer ends with oblique condensation water divertors 20, 21, respectively, each constituted by a groove cut in the concave and/or convex face of the vane, a step in the vane thickness, a band of weld metal or epoxy resin, or a rib attached to the vane. The rib may be provided by a wire or rod of circular, channel or other cross-section, Figs.7 to 10 (not shown). The concavity of the channel faces upstream. The downstream end of each divertor may terminate at a radius from the turbine axis greater than the tip radius of the following rotor blade 11 or 12. Condensation water is directed by divertors 21 into drain passages 24 in the diaphragm ring 16 which connect with a space 25 in the casing communicating through passages 26 with the condenser. Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown) illustrate slightly modified diaphragm rings and water drain passages.
