[Also in Group XXII] A removable, preferably hydraulic, device for uniformly tightening telescopic pit-prop clamps has a ram 8 which presses apart a pair of arms 5 (only one is shown) while a simultaneouslyoperated ram 27 forces in a wedge 10 by means of the lever 11. Both rams are subject to the same hydraulic pressure provided by a pump ram 22 via a delivery valve 25, inlet ports 24 communicating with a reservoir 23 in which a variable air space is maintained by a bladder 36. Automatic means release the hydraulic pressure when a predetermined pressure has been attained, ensuring uniform clamping of successive clamps with uniform wedge-driving forces. In Fig. 4, the pump is driven by a torque wrench forming the pump handle 7. When limiting torque is exceeded, ratchet teeth 31, 32 force the member 32 to the right, a pin 33 operating a release valve 34. In Fig. 6, a limit valve 37 opens under excess pressure and delivers a triggering pulse to the hydraulic relay 39, 40, 41 to release the pressure.
